How to Make and Grab a Button

I am not an expert by any means. What I can do here is tell you how I have learned to do things. I'm sure there are other ways and even better ways, and if so, please feel free to share by leaving a comment. My experience is with blogger, although I imagine the other blogging sites are similar. These directions are meant for blogger. To grab a button:

  • copy the html code from the button you want
  • open your blogger account and choose "layout"
  • click "add a gadget"
  • choose "html" and you'll get a blank box
  • paste the code you have copied in the box
  • click save
That's it! The new button should be on your blog. Go ahead, give it a try with ours. :-) To make your own button:
  • to actually make your own button, you'll need a photo program like Adobe
  • a standard square button size is 125 x 125, so when you open a new document, set the canvas size to 125 x 125 pixels
  • put your images and text on the button
  • save as a gif (jpeg is generally used for photos, but will work & some sites will ask for it specifically)
  • save your image on a website like www.photobucket.com
To put a "grab our button" on your blog:
  • copy the following html code. <div align="center"> <a href="http://mommysidea.blogspot.com" target="_blank"><img alt="Mommy's Idea" src="http://i339.photobucket.com/albums/n453/EllieBags/For%20Blog/MommysIdeaButton.gif"/></a> </div> <div align="center"> <form><textarea rows="6" cols="20"><a href="http://mommysidea.blogspot.com" target="_blank"><img alt="Mommy's Idea" src="http://i339.photobucket.com/albums/n453/EllieBags/For%20Blog/MommysIdeaButton.gif"/></a></textarea></form> </div>

  • open your blogger account and choose "layout"
  • click "add a gadget"
  • choose "html" and you'll get a blank box
  • paste the code you have copied in the box
  • change my information to your information- the url of the blog, the name of the blog, and the link to your image. (You'll need to go back to photobucket or wherever you saved your image and get the direct link code.)
  • click save
Good luck!

This is from Eryn on how to adjust for Wordpress . . .  (Thanks!)

For wordpress users, just go to your widget page (under design), and select a "text" widget, click edit, paste it in (with your own info), save, voila!

I'm still confused as to changing the URL etc for my own button
Please take a look at http://informative1.blogspot.com/
The button that I have there I want to add the picture that I have of the baby praying in a man's hands that are also praying. Once I have done that, how do I make the box that has the code for my followers to grab under my button like yours?
Thanks,
Faith

Lori E said...

I'm sorry but I must be a complete moron. I cannot figure this one out. I have done tons of stuff on my blog but when I try this it doesn't come out correctly. I am using Picasa for the photo link. I have replace the urls with my own. I have inserted the photo link info where I thought it should go but it comes out as html on my page with two symbols where the button should be. The bottom part where you get the html code looks okay. Any ideas?

Jo Brielyn said...

Thanks for the great and easy-to-follow instructions. I've been trying to figure out how to add a button other people could grab. This worked perfectly!

Where did you find the high quality pictures used in your buttons? I'd like to make mine look more professional.

Thanks!

I think I actually managed to make a really basic button...although when I reformatted it to a gif it went all yucky and pixelated...so I left it as a jpeg...any thoughts on how to fix this maybe? And ty for the great ideas on this blog! I am gonna add myself as a follower which will post your site on mine so others can check out how to make them too! Thanks and happy blogging!

Thank You for the button information. I have been wanting to do this for months. I did have a little trouble getting started but it was all me. I use blogger and Picasa. Picasa gives you two choices of links and I was not sure which one to use. I also selected image only so it would not link me back to Picasa.

You mentioned creating a template and header. If I can do it any one can. I did not know a thing and it has taken me months to figure it out but it is coming along decently. Thanks again for the tip.
