Help Entrepreneurs Around the World with Kiva!

logoLeafy3

I loaned money through Kiva a while back when I saw it on Oprah and just re-loaned money to a couple other hardworking women.  You choose entrepreneurs around the world in struggling economic areas to help them out with their businesses.  They repay the loan and you can then withdraw the funds or give other loans.  It’s a great way to help others with their livelihood even if it’s from far away.  I thought some of the many inspiring readers of Mommy’s Idea would be interested . . .

http://www.kiva.org

Kiva's mission is to connect people through lending for the sake of alleviating poverty.

How Kiva Works

1) It all starts with our Field Partners, which are microfinance institutions operating around the world. Our Field Partners approve and disburse a microloan to an entrepreneur in their community. They take a picture of the entrepreneur and write down the entrepreneur’s story.

2) The Field Partner uploads the entrepreneur’s profile to Kiva’s website.

3) Lenders like you browse the entrepreneurs’ profiles and choose someone to lend to, using PayPal or their credit cards.

4) Kiva provides the funds to our Field Partners by aggregating the loan funds from all contributing lenders.

5) Over time, the entrepreneur repays her loan.

6) When lenders get their money back, they can re-lend to another entrepreneur, donate their funds to Kiva (to cover operational expenses), or withdraw their funds to their PayPal accounts.

Meet Mart and Elise from Moody Mamas

Tell us a little about you . . .

Marta Abrams and Elise Rosemarin are two friends that live together , work together, and co-own Moody Mamas in Los Angeles, CA. Though they are both single and without children themselves, Marta and Elise are very passionate about making pregnant women feel beautiful during pregnancy.

What is your business and where can we find it?

Moody Mamas Inc. is a maternity clothing company that specializes in nursing. Moody Mamas has also collaborated with Project Runway winner, Christian Siriano to create the Fierce Mamas for Moody Mamas label. Currently, Moody Mamas is available in over 250 boutiques as well as department stores such as Nordstroms.com, Harrods, Belk and Bon Ton. Recently, Moody Mamas launched a fantastically hip and affordable diffusion line for Target.com.

Is it mom-owned, invented, created . . .?

Moody Mamas Inc. was created by Marta Abrams and Elise Rosemarin. Moody Mamas was created because Marta and Elise were interested in making a line that would make women feel good about themselves. Stemming from ideas that catered to different events in life, Elise and Marta came upon pregnancy. At the time, Marta’s cousin had just had a baby and begged the ladies to design maternity clothes because she felt that the market was lacking. After researching the market themselves, Marta and Elise saw the opportunity to pursue this business venture and immediately put themselves through “maternity boot camp.”  During this time, Elise and Marta set up discussion groups with pregnant women, interviewed many OB-GYN and pediatricians, and even attended a variety of Lamaze classes and prenatal yoga. Eventually, when the time finally felt right, the ladies launched Moody Mamas in September 2008.

A little about your entrepreneur journey so far?

Marta and Elise’s entrepreneurial journey has been arduous but rewarding. Since the company launched during the recession, it has seen many of its clients go out of business and has had to persevere despite the difficult financial climate that we are still in today. Nevertheless, Moody Mamas has attained a lot of success during its infant years for it has received critical praise and has been given the opportunity to sell to its two initial dream clients, Target and Nordstrom.

Where else can people find you?

Moody Mamas is available on www.moodymamas.com. It is also on twitter and facebook. Become our friend!

Anything else you’d like to share?

Moody Mamas clothing is luxurious, fashion forward and will make all pregnant women feel beautiful and confident. Buy some Moody Mamas clothes today!

Meet Karen from Pillow Sew Cute

Tell us a little about you . . .

Karen, married 26 years, 2 grown children (1 cop, 1 student) SanDiego Native. Creative merchandiser for beautiful Home Decor/Garden Arts Shop.

What is your business and where can we find it?

Ouch Pouch(TM) For all your monkey's scrapes and boo boo's..... is a hand held pouch using the most updated designer fabrics, both "mom fashionista" and "child-friendly " with a clear view front pocket. Snaps closed with a colorful cowgirl snap. It holds all necessary first aid supplies for your toddler's little boo boo's and emergencies that happen while out at the park, beach, or anywhere on-the-go! Small enough to fit in your purse, backpack, stroller, or car, but large enough to hold: Neo-to-Go, band aids, antiseptic wipes, tweezers, headache meds, an inhaler, travel sized sun block, a small thermometer, (for us California babies!) It also has room for a lollipop...which of course makes the boo boo go away! With an Ouch Pouch(TM) you will no longer be scrounging at the bottom of your purse for a band aid!  The clear vinyl front pocket makes everything visible so you know right where to find your supplies in a hurry.

This is a New Mommy "Must-Have".

Meet Corri from Chaos Simplified

Tell us a little about you . . .

My name is Corri Bitner, I am the owner and designer of the ‘Chaos . . . simplified’ Womans Day Planner. My husband and I have 3 children (13, 8 and 6) that we homeschool and I also work part time for an oil company. Life is crazy and intense, but I wouldn’t change if for the world!

What is your business and where can we find it?

The ‘Chaos . . . simplified’ Womans Day Planner is designed to be ‘your world at your finger tips’. As a mom it’s so easy to get scatterbrained with all the responsibilities that we take on. Having everything together makes things just that much more manageable so you can actually take a minute to breath!

The feature that makes it completely innovative is that you no longer have to choose between the ‘month at a glance’ view, which gives you the big picture or the ‘week at a glance’ option that offers you the space you need to plan!

Another main focus is to keep everything ‘finances, goals, birthdays and anniversaries, priorities and even your supper plan’ all at your finger tips!

It is for sale on my website at www.chaossimplified.com.

Is it mom-owned, invented, created . . .?

It is definitely, in all aspects, mom all the way!

A little about your entrepreneur journey so far?

My ‘journey’ began about 10 years ago. I was always striving to find the perfect day planner to make life ‘work’, to assist me in all the crazy elements that made up my life. I searched high and low and although I came across some really amazing ones along the way, nothing ever really seemed to 'click'. About 3 years ago I had a creative minute (I still don't know really where I found that spare minute never mind the creative part of it), I announced to my husband that I was going to just make my own! I showed him my idea and he said "Why don't you get it published"! Poor guy, ever since he made that statement he's definitely lost some hair over it!

It’s definitely been an uphill battle at times, in so many ways. I definitely have learned to look back at all of it and see the positive through it. I’ve confirmed something about myself through it, being told ‘no, it can’t be done’ only makes me all the more determined to do it!

Anything else you’d like to share?

My future vision for Chaos . . . simplified is to look for the unique, innovative products that make a woman’s/mom’s life that much more simplified and to make it ‘chick’ and fun at the same time. I’d love to hear what this kind of a product is for all those busy moms out there, so if you have a minute let me know!

Meet Katie from Cayenne Paper

Tell us a little about you . . .
I’m Katie Tardiff and I am the owner and designer (and only employee) of Cayenne Paper: Invitations, Stationery, and Personalized Gifts with FLAVOR! I am also a mother of 2 ½ year old boy/girl twins and work full time as a speech pathologist and preschool special education teacher. I am originally from New Orleans (hence the name of my company) but we now live in the DC metro area.

What is your business and where can we find it?
Cayenne Paper is an online store specializing in anything and everything monogrammed! I have a large line of products ranging from invitations, stationery, sterling silver jewelry, purses/totes, children’s clothing and shoes, towels, tableware, and much more! You can find all of my products on my website: www.cayennepaper.com

Is it mom-owned, invented, created . . .?
I am the sole person behind my business and do it all myself (with the occasional help from my husband to tie bows at the last minute!). I have always had a love for stationery and paper products and found myself as a teenager browsing through the aisles of paper stores and spending my allowance on personalized stationery. Later on, I started making my own stationery to save money and to customize it to my style. Whenever a friend or family member needed an invitation to a party or shower, I was right there to volunteer to make them. After a while and a very bad day at work, my husband mentioned that I should try to make this into an online business, so that’s exactly what I did.

A little about your entrepreneur journey so far?
My husband is an attorney, so naturally I let him take care of all of the logistics of starting my own business. He found out just how easy it is to set up an in-home business, so after a trip down to the county office with some paperwork, I was officially in business. I had no idea how to even make a website, so I bought some software which I had NO idea how to use. I purchased a manual for it (over 500 pages), browsed through the basics of how to get online and made my site with about 30 products for sale. Most of my orders were word-of-mouth, but I did manage to get orders from around the country. Now, I have over 1500 different products online and keep adding more daily! The best thing I have done for my business is to join the community at Merchant Moms (www.merchantmoms.com) for my webhosting and e-commerce store development. From there, I’ve learned a few tricks about how to get traffic to my site and it is starting to really pay off!

Where else can people find you?
I have a blog attached to my Cayenne Paper website and also am on Facebook and Twitter.

1813

http://www.howfasttimeflies.com/

I love this website and wanted to share it with Mommy’s Idea readers!  I love to scrapbook, but sometimes getting out all of those supplies takes more time than I seem to have these days.  I wanted to try digital scrapbooking, but really wanted 12 x 12 pages.  Here’s the answer- How Fast Time Flies!

They have so many adorable templates, and it’s super easy to upload photos, place them on the pages, and journal.  Pages are $5.50 each and they send you beautiful 12 x12 pages to add to your scrapbook.  The website saves all of your pages, so you can do a few at a time and order when you’re ready.  They also have gift certificates and would make a great Christmas present.  :)

You can even download an application to post your pages on Facebook!

Check them out at http://www.howfasttimeflies.com/!

Zeebabee Designs!

zeebabee 3 zebabee 2  zeebabe

http://zeebabee.com

One of the things I love about this online world is the amazing people we meet and the friends we make.  Suzie and I started our journey as entrepreneurs and bloggers around the same time- both because we were inspired by our little ones and had an idea we wanted to make something of.  I’d love for you to check out her fantastic products!

Where do our newborns and infants hang out most of the time (besides their cribs sleeping)?  You guessed it!  On our shoulders,  in our arms,  or on the floor for tummy time… So why not stimulate their vision with something that they can actually see while doing something that they really love…snuggling with you!!

-Infants reflexively prefer to look at high-contrast edges and patterns.

-Objects with patterns having 100% contrast …that is, black and white…. are the easiest for newborns and young infants to see.

-Research proves high contrast graphics improve baby’s early recognition.

So what would be more fitting than to put a stimulating design on a burp cloth for baby to see?! Check out their line of visually stimulating burp cloths at . . .

Tell us a little about you . . . My name is Wendy and I am a stay at home Mommy of 2 wonderful children, Bruce (turns 6 today!), and Brooke-Lynn, who will be 2 in January. I started making diaper cakes in 2007 when I received one at my baby shower. It was the best gift I got, and I have learned, the more diapers the better! This is why my cakes have so many more diapers than you will find on a typical diaper cake, all while costing less and with free shipping! I also have baby shower favors, such as washcloth lollipops, washcloth butterflies, diaper purses and other gifts, and every time a new request is made, it is another thing added to my website. I love custom orders!

What is your business and where can we find it? Diaper Cakes by Wendy. I currently have no physical store, but would love to some day!  You can find me online at http://www.diapercakesbywendy.com/.

Is it mom-owned, invented, created . . .? Yes, it is Mom owned, and I do all this on my own. I make everything after it is ordered, this way you can get it just the way you want it!

A little about your entrepreneur journey so far? It definitely started off very slow, I was only making diaper cakes when I started, but so were hundreds of other people, so I got nowhere. But I did not give up and my husband would not let me, he thought I had something good! So I kept on and tried different ways of making diaper cakes. I tried them on eBay, locally, in gift shops, and at the flea market with no luck at all. Finally it dawned on me that I needed something inexpensive to attract buyers. So this is where the mini diaper cake came from. I was the first person to make a true mini diaper cake, as back then, all mini cakes were actually large one tiered cakes. I made them with just 8 diapers and priced them low. I finally had some luck and was selling them good until everyone else started making them too. But by then I had attracted enough attention to my larger cakes that it didn't matter. Now, I have over 25 different baby shower gifts and favors. I don't quiet make enough to survive on yet, but I am hoping to get there eventually! I just started craft shows and right now am doing one per month, so I am hoping it becomes profitable too!

Where else can people find you?  You can find me anywhere! My blog is http://sassy8722.blogspot.com
Twitter ID is Sassy8722
Flicker is DiaperCakesByWendy
And various other sites, my main user name is Sassy8722 you can find a lot on me if you just Google that! :-)

Anything else you’d like to share?  I absolutely love what I do with a passion. Being a Mom of 2, I know what to use and what not to use on babies. I never use store brand diapers, I use Luvs on every item I make. I use high quality washcloths on the favors as well, nothing from the Dollar Store. I guarantee you will not find a better value anywhere else on high quality work with high quality items. I can make any theme or colors, so if you don’t see what you want, just ask! Thank you SO much!

Protect those Precious Photos with Picture Keeper!

pklogo   003 IMGP0327-2

We all have those incredibly precious pictures, like two of my favorites above.  :)  In the days of digital pictures, we think nothing of housing them all on our computer.  What we have to remember is that it is so important to back them up!  While there are many ways to do this, Picture Keeper has come up with a very simple one.

I love that it knows to search for your pictures and that it is easy to backup any new pictures the next time.  They’ll even send you a reminder e-mail if you sign up on their website!  I wanted to try the Picture Keeper to back up my son’s photos.  (My many other pictures will be next.)  It allowed me to choose the files I wanted to search through and the file extensions I wanted it to look for.  It works great and I am so happy to have found such a great product.

Check it out at http://www.picturekeeper.com.

Here are the easy instructions on how to use the Picture Keeper . . .

Just insert the Picture Keeper drive into any USB port on your PC, click "Start Backup" and Picture Keeper automatically finds and saves all your pictures. That’s it! They all fit right there on the Picture Keeper drive. What's more, subsequent backups are fast because Picture Keeper will only copy the newest images when you use it again to save your recently added or changed pictures.

*Users can also choose the more "advanced" options which allow you to select additional types of files or directories you want saved.
